Message from the Dean

Tsuyoshi Hanamoto

The Graduate School of Life Science and Systems Engineering (LSSE) was established in 2000 at Kitakyushu Science and Research Park as an institution focusing on the utilization of unique functions and phenomena of biological world to promote the advanced research and implement them into practical engineering technology. The principle role of this Graduate school of LSSE is envisioned to link the fruits of both of the education and research demanded by today’s needs to the development of society. In response to the fast socio-environmental transformations, the Graduate School of LSSE made a fresh start beginning from the 2014 academic year. Today, Japan is facing serious problems pertaining to the lack of resources and energy along with the environmental preservations. Our mission is therefore, to realize a society in which people can lead a truly fulfilling life and to meet the expectations of modern society by overcoming these issues through developing new technologies based on life sciences. To achieve these goals, LSSE will undoubtedly strive on continuing the fundamental research as the top priority in harmony with extending the focus of our education and research towards their practical applications.

The Graduate School of LSSE offers two Masters programs in the Department of Biological Functions Engineering and the Department of Human Intelligence Systems, respectively. Leveraging the strengths of engineering, the Department of Biological Functions Engineering will strive to realize the superior functions possessed by organisms, such as their energy-saving features, high efficiency, and ability to adapt to the environment. At the same time, this department seeks to foster talent in individuals who can solve social issues through the above realization also. Meanwhile, the Department of Human Intelligence Systems will focus on the principles of human intelligence aiming for their applications to realize intelligence systems and intelligent information processing by amicable implementation of engineering methods. This department will also foster talent in individuals who can solve social issues through the above applications/implementations and making contributions to industry.

The Doctoral program is consolidated under the name of Department of Life Science and Systems Engineering in 2014. It will strive to understand the superior structures and functions of organisms, such as their resource and energy-saving features, ability of environmental adaptation and affinity to humans. This department will foster talent in individuals who can transfer this understanding to engineering applications. At the same time, through linking to society and responding to its needs, this department will develop future professionals who offer solutions to various issues confronting society, contribute to society’s sustainable harmony with nature, and play a dominant role as global leaders. These professionals will also have the capability to monitor the latest trends in research and technology continuously and strive to produce innovative research results. With the internationally competent research environment, this department will foster the professionals who can contribute towards the development of eco- and human-friendly society. Specifically, this goal will be achieved through research activities in the diverse fields of energy-saving devices such as power electronics, energy converting devices such as solar and fuel cells, eco-friendly materials, sensors, robot engineering and robot control systems, and software, as well as research that integrates human bodies and mechanics.

Moreover, the Department of Life Science and Systems Engineering offers education in collaboration with companies and universities such as the Joint Graduate Schools (The University of Kitakyushu, Waseda University, and Kyushu Institute of Technology) for "the Car Electronics Course", "the Intelligent Car & Robotics Course", and the "Cooperative project to develop human resources that support the continuity of manufacturing skills and expertise through regional partnerships" with Kyushu Dental University, University of Occupational and Environmental Health, the University of Kitakyushu and Kyushu Institute of Technology. In addition, the "Green Innovation Leader Development Course", is offered through cooperation with departments within the university. These initiatives reflect the LSSE’s ongoing efforts to exploit the advantages offered by its location in the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park which enables to strengthen the education and research in collaboration with the University of Kitakyushu, Waseda University and various companies. Moreover, to develop talent in individuals who can respond to society’s rapid globalization, the Graduate School of Life Science and Systems Engineering offers a program that dispatches many students abroad. The LSSE also operates a research and development center in the University of Putra Malaysia, where students are trained to enhance their global perspectives through education and research.

We invite you to the Graduate School of LSSE located in the Kitakyushu Science and Research Park to immerse yourself in a world-class education and research environment and to launch your promising career on an international stage.
