Kyutech student Wins Excellent Award at the International Conference of Weighing (ICW) 2026

Update:2026.07.03

Mr. Yuuki Ohta, a second-year doctoral program student, Department of Creative Informatics , Graduate School of Computer Science and Systems Engineering, received the Excellent Award for his poster presentation at the International Conference of Weighing 2026. The conference was held on-site at the Kitakyushu International Conference Center from June 8 to 10, 2026.

This research focuses on developing a new optical measurement method for observing pressure waves generated within a highly confined region extending only a few hundred nanometers (nm; one-billionth of a meter) from a solid surface. This corresponds to a region less than one-thousandth the diameter of a human hair. The method utilizes weak scattered light generated during total internal reflection on a mirror-like surface with a roughness of less than 100 nm. By conducting experiments that simulate the minute density changes (refractive index variations) in a liquid induced by pressure waves, the study successfully achieved highly sensitive detection of these changes.

Such microscopic pressure variations near solid–liquid interfaces play important roles in a wide range of applications, including semiconductor manufacturing, precision cleaning, chemical reactions, and biomedical processes. However, direct observation of these phenomena has been difficult because they occur within an extremely narrow region near the surface. The proposed method has the potential to visualize previously inaccessible near-surface phenomena and contribute to the advancement of high-precision measurement technologies in various fields.
