Since Japanese national universities were incorporated in April 2004, Kyushu Institute of Technology has increasingly strengthened its relationship with industry. The number of joint research and sponsored research projects with industry exceeded 290 in 2008, and their contract amount exceeded ¥ 1 B in 2007.
The number of domestic patent applications by Kyutech increased dramatically in 2004 when Kyutech's Intellectual Patent Office began its full-scale operation. PCT international applications began in 2005, and were followed by an increasing transition to foreign countries from the PCT phase, begun in 2006.
Kyutech commenced technology transfer in 2004, by licensing or assigning intellectual property such as patents, and copyrights of program and consulting. Although income by technology transfer is still small, the trend is towards rapid growth.
On the matter of spin-outs, which are one way of returning academic achievement to society, the accumulated number of these companies from Kyutech is undergoing a transition. From eighteen companies in 2002, numbers have grown to forty-five in 2008. These figures all fall within the top eleven in the annual rankings of all Japanese universities. Where IT-related technology is concerned, Kyutech is among the nation's leading institutions for spin-out founding.
